Elizabeth Debicki on playing Princess Diana in 'The Crown': 'It's been a gift'

Debicki, who is the first Australian to win an Emmy in the category, says she was drawn to the role because of Diana's "resilience and strength"

Elizabeth Debicki has said that playing Princess Diana in 'The Crown' has been a "gift". The Australian actress, who became the first person from her country to win an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of the late princess, spoke about the experience of taking on the iconic role in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's been a gift," Debicki said. "It's been a huge gift to be able to play this role and to be a part of this show. I've learned so much and it's been an incredible experience."

Debicki, who is known for her roles in 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Tenet', said she was drawn to the role of Diana because of her "resilience and strength".

"I was really interested in exploring her resilience and her strength," Debicki said. "She was a woman who was under a lot of pressure and scrutiny, and she never lost her sense of humor or her compassion. I found that really inspiring."

Debicki also praised the show's creator, Peter Morgan, for his "brilliant" writing and said that she was "honored" to be a part of the series.

"Peter Morgan is a brilliant writer and I'm so grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to play this role," Debicki said. "I'm so honored to be a part of this show and to be able to tell this story."

The fifth season of 'The Crown', which stars Debicki as Diana, premiered on Netflix on November 9.
